The Connect Team Donates Outplacement Services to VRH Children's Charity

VRH Volunteer Reading Help is a national charity that helps disadvantaged children develop a love of reading and learning. Due to internal restructuring, VRH has reduced their number of employees. To support them during their career transition, The Connect Team has donated Outplacement services to all affected employees.

Sadly, 1 in 5 adults in England are incapable of finding a plumber in the Yellow Pages because their literacy skills are below the level of an 11-year old (A fresh start, Sir Claus Moser).

VRH tackles this problem in its infancy by working to support children who find reading a struggle. Without literacy skills children face a lifetime of social exclusion. An hour of individual dedicated, positive time each week can:

  • change a child's perception of his or her ability
  • ensure improved achievement in the classroom
  • improve their social interaction with others
  • develop better motivation towards learning generally
  • cut down levels of truancy

The VRH formula is very simple. They bring together children who need support and adults with patience, time to give and a love of reading and learning. VRH trains the adults for their task, resources them with books and game boxes and supports them throughout their volunteering.

VRH has 2,600 volunteers throughout the UK, working with over 8,000 children aged 6-11 who find reading a challenge. Without individual support children can fall behind their peers and lack confidence and self-esteem. Many may find it difficult to interact socially with adults. The trained network of reading helpers support the same children week in, week out, giving each an hour of quality, one to one time. They read, they play, they talk. With the support of VRH a new chapter in their life is opened, one which will provide them with opportunities that may otherwise be denied.
